The Vermeer training department approached the Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) team asking for help delivering beginner level training content to new service techs. Trainers wanted to offer a self-paced solution to allow new technicians to gain the knowledge necessary for more advanced class offerings. This would also increase access to beginner courses – at times, it was difficult to source a machine to use for hands-on trainings, or techs at smaller shops would not have funds allocated to visit Vermeer HQ and take the on-site course.
• Hands-on learner - learns best by performing tasks and repetition
• Spatial acuity - has to translate schematics and documents to real life machine
• Tech is secondary - often depends on technology to accomplish job, but it isn't the core of their expertise; younger techs adopting tech more and more
The first iteration was mainly to test that our app could fetch the 3D model and schematic documents from our blob storage database. We also created a link between components on the schematic and the 3D model - when users clicked key components, they would highlight and pulse on the model to help new techs learn the location. Model opacity could also be toggled for better locating of internal components.
The second iteration included one full beginner training course with voiceover, animations, and interactive elements as well as quality of life improvements we got from user feedback.
